Even though it was another difficult year for the maritime industry the demand for training continued to be high in 2015: Over 8,500 participants took the opportunity to build up their competencies by taking part in around 850 Maritime Academy courses worldwide. This demonstrates that our customers believe that having well qualified staff will help them to stay ahead in these challenging times.

Training is constantly on the agenda – not only for complying with  and implementing new regulations but also to build the competence that will be  needed  to face  the challenges to come.
Our goal is to help our customers to effectively improve their business performance and to find solutions to become safer, smarter, and greener.

What can you expect in 2016?
Maritime Academy is committed to safety of life at sea and this is why we focus on the Human Element in shipping. Inadequate skills or insufficient competence in key areas are still responsible for the majority of maritime accidents.
Knowing how to make the most of existing systems and new technologies and applying regulations is as important as the development of leadership, communication and teamwork skills. More and more companies are turning their attention to improving their employees’ soft skills enabling them to communicate better and lead more effectively.

Reducing accidents through competence building is another decisive approach to enhance safety. Investing time in establishing a “Behaviour Based Safety” culture within your company is the best way to ensure that people react appropriately at those crucial moments.
The demand for two new courses in our portfolio, Communicating and Leading Effectively and Behaviour Based Safety, confirms the importance of these topics for the maritime industry – better communication and leadership and a change in the mindset towards a safety culture leads to the reduction of incidences of human error in the longer term.

You will also find two new course titles relating to STCW in particular: Understanding STCW, incl. Latest Amendments and STCW for Crewing Managers. They provide background information about this important convention and focus on competence requirements and certification needs for seafarers.

Talking about safety at sea our course portfolio provides a full range of training related to all aspects of Risk Assessment and Risk Management.
In 2015, our top selling course was once again Internal Auditor ISM-ISPS-MLC for Shipping Companies, attended by 740 participants, that’s 20% more than 2014 exceeding all our expectations!
